Why Visit Volcanoes National Park?
Located in northwestern Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park protects over 160 square kilometers (62 square miles) of montane rainforest and bamboo forest across the Virunga Mountains. The park is home to roughly one-third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it one of the best places anywhere to observe these critically endangered primates in their natural habitat.
Beyond gorillas, the park boasts dramatic volcanic landscapes, moss-covered forests, rare birds, golden monkeys, and breathtaking scenery that makes every hike an adventure.
The Gorilla Tracking Experience
Your adventure begins before sunrise at the park headquarters in Kinigi, where experienced rangers assign visitors to one of the habituated gorilla families based on fitness level and hiking preference.
After a briefing on gorilla behavior and conservation guidelines, you’ll drive to the trailhead before entering the forest alongside expert trackers and armed park rangers.
Every trek is different.
Some gorilla families are found within an hour, while others require several hours of hiking through bamboo forests, dense vegetation, volcanic slopes, and muddy trails. The anticipation builds with every step until your guide quietly signals that the gorillas are just ahead.
Then comes the moment you’ve traveled across the world for.
A massive silverback watches calmly as his family feeds nearby. Curious juveniles tumble through the vegetation. Mothers cradle their infants with remarkable tenderness. The forest falls silent except for the sounds of leaves rustling and gentle vocalizations.
Visitors are allowed one unforgettable hour with the gorillas—a carefully managed experience designed to protect both the animals and their habitat.
Gorilla Families in Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park is home to numerous habituated gorilla families available for tourism, each with its own unique personalities and social dynamics.
Depending on ranger assignments, you may visit families living on lower volcanic slopes with relatively easy hikes or groups that inhabit higher elevations requiring a more challenging trek. Regardless of which family you meet, every encounter is extraordinary.

Best Time for Gorilla Tracking in Rwanda
Gorilla tracking is possible throughout the year. Rwanda generally has two drier periods and two wetter periods, but forest conditions can change quickly, and rain is possible even during the drier months.
June to September
These months are often popular for trekking because they fall within Rwanda’s longer dry season. Trails may be less muddy in some areas, and conditions can be favourable for combining gorilla tracking with other outdoor activities. Demand can be high, so book early.
December to February
The shorter dry season is another popular period to visit. It can be a good option for travellers planning a winter escape or combining Rwanda with a broader East African safari.
March to May
The longer rainy season can bring wetter trails, muddy ground and more challenging hiking conditions. However, the forest remains beautiful, and this period may appeal to travellers with flexible schedules.
October to November
The shorter rainy season brings variable conditions, with opportunities for gorilla tracking alongside other experiences in Rwanda.
Which month should you choose?
The best time depends on your preferred travel dates, trekking fitness, accommodation choices and overall itinerary. Earth Explorers can help you plan around these priorities while checking permit availability before confirming arrangements.
Where to See Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda’s principal destination for mountain gorilla trekking. The park forms part of the wider Virunga conservation landscape, which extends across Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The forest is home to habituated mountain gorilla families that are visited under carefully managed conditions. Each trekking group is assigned a family by park authorities, so visitors cannot normally select a particular family in advance.
Your guide will lead the trek and explain the appropriate behaviour around the gorillas. The encounter takes place in their natural habitat, not in a zoo or enclosed wildlife facility.
The park’s combination of montane forest, bamboo vegetation and volcanic landscapes makes the journey remarkable even before you encounter the gorillas.
