Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Welcome to Tanzania – Arrival in Arusha
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where you will be welcomed by your Earth Explorers representative.
Meet your expedition team before transferring to your hotel. Take the remainder of the day to relax after your international journey and prepare for your Kilimanjaro adventure.
You will also receive a comprehensive climb briefing, including an equipment inspection and final preparations for the trek ahead.
Accommodation: Arusha
Meals: Breakfast
Day 2: Machame Gate – Machame Camp
After breakfast, transfer to Machame Gate, where you will complete the registration formalities before beginning your climb via the scenic Machame Route, also known as the Whiskey Route.
The trek begins through the lush rainforest on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail is surrounded by dense vegetation, towering trees and beautiful mountain scenery.
Gradually ascend toward Machame Camp, where your mountain crew will prepare your camp and meals.
Enjoy dinner and rest as you prepare for the next stage of your climb.
Hiking Time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Accommodation: Machame Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 3: Machame Camp – Shira Camp
After breakfast, continue your ascent toward Shira Camp.
The trail gradually leaves the rainforest behind as the landscape transforms into open moorland. With increasing elevation, you will enjoy panoramic views across the surrounding landscape and, when conditions are clear, spectacular views of Kilimanjaro’s summit.
Take a steady pace throughout the hike to allow your body to adjust naturally to the altitude.
Arrive at Shira Camp, enjoy your evening meal and settle in for the night.
Elevation: 3,000 m – 3,840 m
Hiking Time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Accommodation: Shira Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 4: Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
Today is an important acclimatization day.
Leave Shira Camp and ascend toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,630 metres. Spending time at this higher elevation before descending helps your body adapt to the increasing altitude.
After reaching Lava Tower, descend toward Barranco Camp, surrounded by dramatic volcanic landscapes and the towering Barranco Wall.
This classic “climb high, sleep low” strategy provides valuable acclimatization while allowing you to continue progressing toward the summit.
Elevation: 3,840 m – 3,960 m
Hiking Time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Accommodation: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 5: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp
After breakfast, tackle one of the most memorable sections of the Machame Route: the Barranco Wall.
With the support of your experienced mountain guides, carefully make your way up the wall before continuing through spectacular alpine valleys toward Karanga Camp.
The day’s trek is relatively shorter, allowing valuable time for rest and acclimatization once you reach camp.
Enjoy the mountain scenery before dinner and an early rest.
Hiking Time: Approximately 4–5 hours
Accommodation: Karanga Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 6: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
After breakfast, continue your ascent toward Barafu Camp, your final base before the summit attempt.
The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you enter Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude alpine desert.
Arrive at Barafu Camp, settle in and enjoy a nourishing meal. Your guides will brief you about the summit attempt and ensure you are fully prepared.
Rest, hydrate and get as much sleep as possible because your summit climb will begin around midnight.
Hiking Time: Approximately 3–4 hours
Accommodation: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 7: Summit Day – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
This is the ultimate day of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
Around midnight, begin your summit ascent under a spectacular African night sky. The climb toward Stella Point is demanding, but your guides will maintain a slow and steady pace to help conserve your energy.
After reaching Stella Point, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.
Celebrate your achievement at the Roof of Africa, take photographs and enjoy the extraordinary views before beginning your descent.
Continue down toward Mweka Camp, where you can enjoy a well-earned rest after the long summit day.
Hiking Time: Approximately 12–16 hours
Accommodation: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 8: Mweka Gate – Summit Certificate – Departure
After breakfast, begin your final descent through Kilimanjaro’s beautiful rainforest toward Mweka Gate.
Once you reach the gate, complete the final exit procedures and receive your official Mount Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate, celebrating your achievement of reaching Uhuru Peak.
You will then be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your international departure.
For travelers with additional time, the original Earth Explorers itinerary also presents the option of extending the journey with a Tanzania safari or Zanzibar beach experience.

International Airfare Protection
Every Earth Explorers expedition includes an international airfare allowance based on average economy-class fares from select major international departure gateways at the time the itinerary is published.
This airfare allowance is included in your package price. If the actual airfare at the time of ticketing exceeds the included allowance due to seasonal demand, airline fare increases, limited seat availability, changes in departure city, or traveler-requested itinerary modifications, the traveler will be responsible for paying the fare difference before airline tickets are issued.
If the actual airfare is less than the included allowance, any applicable savings may be reflected in the final invoice or applied toward eligible travel services, at the discretion of Earth Explorers Inc.
